GCSE Dance - new course starting September 2026
GCSE Dance is open to year 9 pupils and above. It gives students a deep understanding of performance, choreography and dance theory while developing confidence, creativity and physical and analytical skills. Our course is ideal for motivated young dancers who want a recognised academic qualification alongside practical, vocational training.
Qualification information:
- Nationally recognised AQA GCSE qualification
- Course start: new cohort beginning September 2026.
- Open to pupils in Year 9 and above (younger pupils may be considered by request).
- Prior dance experience is helpful but not essential.
Assessment split:
- 30% Performance (practical). entertainarts.co.uk
- 30% Choreography (practical). entertainarts.co.uk
- 40% Theory (written paper and controlled assessment-style work)
Weekly Course commitment:
- 1 hour 30 minutes practical sessions.
- 1 hour 30 minutes theory sessions.
- Extra sessions and private tuition are available if required (not expected as part of the standard programme).
- We recommend additional independent practice time for choreography and rehearsal to support development
Students will learn
- Technique and performance skills across a range of dance styles.
- Choreographic devices and how to plan, develop and present original work.
- Dance theory: analysis of professional repertoire, context, safe practice, anatomy and health for dancers.
- Critical reflection and evaluative writing to support the theory component.
- Collaborative skills, leadership in group work and project management during performance preparation.
Teaching approach and assessment support
- Practical lessons focus on technique, repertoire and performance; theory lessons cover history, analysis and exam preparation.
- Continuous formative feedback, mock assessments and preparation for formal practical and written exams.
